Nilgiri Tea

Nilgiri Tea is a very aromatic, and flavoured tea which is instantly recogniseable to anybody who drinks a 'normal teabag' as most Nilgiri tea finds it's way into tea bag blends. It is safe to say however, that a good quality Nilgiri Tea can be a real pleasure to drink and some Nilgiris can command a very high price, in some instances over $500 per KG. Nilgiri tea is grown in the Ghat Mountains of South India, (also know as the Blue Mountains and it is this depiction on the Nilgiri logo). About a third is grown by large plantations and the rest by small growers with only a small holding of land.
Most Nilgiri tea is produced using the CTC method (Crush, Tear, Curl) which yields more cups per volume but it is the hand sorted whole leaf grades known as Orange Pekoe which command the highest prices. The strong and aromatic flavour of Nilgiri makes the leaf very sought after for blending and the flavour can be instantly recogniseable in the many breakfast blends in which it would typically be mixed with an Assam, for example.

The Nilgiri logo as seen above can only be awarded by the governing authority 'The Tea Board of India' which strictly oversees the quality of all Indian Tea. Only the highest standards are accepted before a tea producer can display the logo on its packaging. Not only must the tea be of pure origin but other criteria have to be met regarding the processing and the quality of the tea.
